Check Out Nicole Goux’s Comics

For a couple years now, my friend Federico and I have been participating in a monthly comics-jam anthology thing called Melt-Thology. It takes place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at Meltdown Comics in Hollywood. Sometimes my daughter Maeve and my wife Carrie go with us. Each month attendees draw a page of comics, and pay $3 for printing. The next month, we pick up the completed staple-bound photocopied comics anthology, and we crank out a new page.

There’s more to say about Melt-Thology, but that’s another story.

(Except that I have to say thanks to Chuck Kerr for starting Melt-Thology and keeping it going strong for a couple years, before recently retiring.)

Today I want to recommend the comics of Nicole Goux. 

Goux is one of the Melt-Thology regulars who, each month, manages to turn out a comics page that is handsome, readable, and fun. Her pages are among the best ones in Melt-Thology, which is, frankly, pretty uneven overall. There are good pages in every issue, but it’s also a low-bar place for people to try their hand at drawing comics… and pretty much everything is cranked out in a couple of hours… so there are plenty of forgettable pages, too.

Goux, sometimes collaborating with another Melt-Thology regular Dave Baker, has produced a bunch of self-published comics. Some are photocopied zines, including This is not a Girl Gang. Some are varying degrees of higher production values, including Goodnight Honey, Fuck Off Squad, and Shitty Watchmen.

Last week my daughter Maeve and I went to a signing event for Goux, celebrating her debut in the more-or-less big-publishing-industry comics world. She wrote and drew the 10-page lead story in Jem and the Holograms: Dimensions #3, published by IDW, released last Wednesday. We headed downtown to A Shop Called Quest and bought copies of Jem signed and remarqued by Goux. Is it the best comics story ever? Nah – but it’s very good. The art is excellent; the story is fun. My daughter and I enjoyed it, so I am happy to give it a shout out here. And to look forward to bigger and better things from Goux in the future.
